Chapter 6

Grace and Donna had whipped both Jade and her apartment into shape so quickly it made her dizzy. She stood and took it all in—the candles burning, the uncorked bottle of wine with two glasses, and the scarf draped over the lampshade for atmosphere according to Grace.

The piles of used crumpled tissues were gone. The pillow and the blanket Jade had dragged from her bed to the couch to wallow in days ago somehow got back on the now neatly made bed. And Jade herself was not only freshly showered and dressed in a velvet sweat suit, which would be easy to get out of according to Donna, but she had on makeup and perfume for the first time in a week.

Donna stood in the center of the room, hands on her hips as she surveyed the area. “I think you’re ready.”

“Everything looks great.” Jade let out small laugh, the first one in a week. “Have you guys done this before? You’re like the booty call makeover mavens.”

Donna smiled. “Sure we have.”

“Oh yeah. We’re experts.” Grace nodded.

A knock at the door stopped the conversation dead in its tracks.

“Oh my God.” Jade felt herself begin to tremble.

“Relax.” Grace’s voice was firm. Jade didn’t dare go against her order.

“Next time we see her, she might be engaged.” Donna looked as if she was resisting the urge to jump up and down. Meanwhile, Jade wasn’t so sure about her prediction.

“I’ll be happy if he ever speaks to me again.”

“Jade, hon. You really need to set your expectations a little higher.” Grace turned to Donna. “She’s fucking gorgeous. Doesn’t she own a mirror?”

“Shh, lecture her tomorrow. Open the door now.”

Grace did and Daniel stood in the doorway, looking as tired and haggard and uncertain as Jade felt, and he was the most welcome sight in the world.

“Um, we’re gonna leave you two alone.” Donna looked to Jade and waited for her nod of consent before she and Grace smiled at Daniel and left, closing the door firmly behind them.

“Hi.” Jade had to work to look Daniel in the face. He wasn’t having the same problem. He stared her directly in the eye with a look on his face like she was an angel who had fallen from the sky and he was amazed to be in her presence.

What she had done to him, to them, broke her heart and probably his too, and yet he still loved her. She could see that in his eyes.

“I’m so sorry.” She took a step forward.

He closed the rest of the distance between them and held her, as if afraid to spook her. “It’s okay.”

The tears welled over the rim of her eyes. “No, it’s not. I was a stupid idiot. I thought you were cheating on me.”

Daniel pulled back and frowned. “What? Why would you think that?”

She managed to get the story out with only a few breaks to wipe away the tears. She especially made sure to include the part about Grace’s revenge plan and Guy in the coffee shop.
